September is Deaf Awareness Month!
September 6: NAD (National Association of the Deaf) is formed!
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) was founded in 1880 by deaf leaders to champion the rights of the American deaf and hard of hearing community, focusing on preserving American Sign Language (ASL), advocating for educational and employment opportunities, and promoting civil rights.
Key moments include the 1896 election of the first woman to its board, the 1965 acceptance of Black members after the Civil Rights Act, and its pivotal role in the passage of federal laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
The NAD remains a significant civil rights organization, with a Deaf Culture and History Section dedicated to celebrating the history and culture of the deaf community.
