September is Deaf Awareness Month!
September 21: ADA (Americans with Disability Act)
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA, 1990) is a landmark civil‑rights law that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities, including Deaf and hard‑of‑hearing individuals. It requires reasonable accommodations in employment and effective communication in state/local government and public accommodations—commonly met with qualified sign‑language interpreters, captioning, or other auxiliary aids unless they impose undue hardship.
Subsequent clarifications, notably the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 and agency guidance, broadened coverage and spelled out expectations for access. The ADA has driven major advances for Deaf people: wider interpreter availability, captioning in media and events, accessible emergency services, and workplace accommodations to ensure meaningful participation in public life.
