September 13: National Theatre of the Deaf (NTD)
The National Theatre of the Deaf (NTD), founded in 1967, is the United States’ longest-standing touring theatre company, pioneering a unique dual-language theatrical style that merges American Sign Language (ASL) with spoken English, music, and movement.
The NTD was Initiated by Dr. Edna Simon Levine and brought to reality by a federal grant. The NTD was co-founded by David Hays and professional deaf actor Bernard Bragg, establishing a professional theatre school to train Deaf actors.
The NTD has toured extensively, performing across the U.S. and internationally, receiving a Tony Award, and significantly influencing deaf theatre and Deaf culture by showcasing the art of sign language.
