September is Deaf Awareness Month!
September 10: Deaflympics Founded
The Deaflympics were founded in Paris, France, in 1924 by Eugène Rubens-Alcais as the “International Silent Games” (1924-1965) for deaf athletes from nine countries, a vision of international sport for the Deaf community.
The International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD) was formed the same year to organize the Games, which were later renamed the “World Games for the Deaf” (1966-1999) and most recently the “Deaflympics” (2001-now).
The Deaflympics provide a sporting platform for deaf people, focusing on communication and culture as a minority group, distinct from other disability sports.
