We are seeking for D/HH participants to be involved with a study:
You are cordially invited to participate in a study conducted by researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder on the health impacts of October 2025 floods on Southwest Colorado Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (D/HH) Communities.
Interested in participating? Please use the following link to watch a short video. Scan the QR-Code at the end of the video to review the consent form in both English and ASL video formats, and answer our initial screening questions (via Qualtrics): https://youtu.be/Dg1B0a_Z7Xo
Note: The following paragraphs contain more detailed information about the project. If you would prefer to review this content via an ASL video instead, please use this link:https://youtu.be/lFk9lT_CEAg
Study information: The purpose of this study is to understand how D/HH individuals residing in southwest Colorado perceived and responded to flood alerts during the October 2025 flood events, and what factors related to communication barriers, mental and physical health, and preparedness and recovery behaviors most influenced their decisions and outcomes. We will also present you with a new alert modality (ASL video messages generated by artificial intelligence) and ask that you compare it to standardized wireless emergency alerts considering outcomes such as improved comprehension, trustworthiness, and intended health-related protective actions. Key insights and findings will be made publicly available in research papers, public reports, and online data hubs for the broader community of scientists, policymakers, and the general public.
In order to participate in this study, you must be 18 years of age or older, self-identify as D/HH, use ASL as a primary mode of communication, and have been a resident of or physically present in one of the affected Southwest Colorado counties during the October 2025 flood events. As a token of our appreciation for your time and contribution, you will receive a $50 e-gift card upon completing this study. There is no other direct benefit to participating, but sharing your experiences can help improve disaster safety for the D/HH community, and guide more inclusive public safety systems in the future.
After you provide consent, you will complete a brief 10-15 minute eligibility questionnaire online (via Qualtrics), followed by a 5-minute linguistic screening over Zoom. Once these steps are complete, we will schedule your interview, which will take 45-60 minutes and will also be conducted remotely via Zoom.
This study and its design are approved by the University of Colorado Boulder Institutional Review Board (IRB):
